But Jaryd didn’t know how to tie his shoes when he went missing. His shoes later turned up – laces tied and all. Then there’s Jaryd Leto, a tiny 3-year-old who went missing from a trail in Northern Colorado. Take for example Alois Krost, a 62-year-old German physics professor, a highly skilled mountaineer who vanished in Lake Arrowhead. Those who vanish without a trace tend to be highly intellectual types, while others have been children. Is it part of their code of conduct, or are they too afraid to say what they’re really thinking? Who Is Disappearing? Park rangers and service staff are reluctant to speak up. K9s can’t even pick up a scent with their highly trained noses. Strange weather patterns erupt after someone goes missing as if the earth is covering up the trail. Beyond the standard 7-10 day investigation window and period of grief for those affected by the disappearances, no one talks about it. What makes these disappearances strange is the fact that once they happen, mum’s the word. Sometimes they return, and sometimes they don’t. Since 1752, thousands of visitors to National Parks and Forests in the Western U.S. The just completed project, which was successfully funded by a Kickstarter campaign, is being considered by several film festivals.Special thanks to Jim Malliard, paranormal researcher and radio host for his views and contributions to this article. Nine months later, his backpack and vest were found, 15 miles away from the other location, yet it would seem impossible that he could have traveled that distance in the snow without shoes, Paulides noted. A week after his disappearance, they found his boots and camelback in the snow, but ground searchers and dogs yielded no further evidence in the area. An experienced hunter, Aaron Hedges, was hunting with friends in the 'Crazy Mountains' in Montana in 2014, and get separated from the group, but was in contact with them via radio, before he went missing. Paulides also has documented cases of bow hunters' mysterious disappearances, in which they are either not found or found under very bizarre conditions. The Nevada State Journal had a headline saying "Tony walked into what has proven to be a mystery void." Paulides detailed the 1966 case of an accountant from Reno, who went hunting in McCarthy, Alaska and then was never found despite numerous air and ground searches. In one of the strangest case histories, three hunters disappeared in separate locations in far northern Michigan within seven days of each other in 1909. The largest number of disappearances of hunters have taken place in the states of Idaho, Montana, Washington, Maine, Oregon, and Colorado, he cited. There are 59 geographical clusters of missing people in North America, with the largest being in Yosemite Park, he reported. They carry weapons with them," he noted, so it's all the more startling when they vanish in inexplicable ways. 7/26/2023 0 Comments The house that jack built![]() ![]() Von Trier wasn’t officially credited on The Idiots because that film was made following the Dogme 95 Manifesto, which he had created in 1995 with fellow Dane Thomas Vinterberg as an attempt to make a purer cinema, freed from the capitalist and technological corruption of studios. Each heroine finds herself in intractable situations with people who take advantage of her generosity with exponential cruelty. Von Trier’s “Golden Heart” trilogy-starting with Breaking the Waves in 1996 and continuing with The Idiots in 1998 and the musical Dancer in the Dark in 2000-derives its title from the saintly women each film centers on. This equation of shock + craftsmanship is also what von Trier has built his career upon: He could be said to have abused his status as an auteur filmmaker to implicitly legitimize the violence in his films, which is itself often perpetuated by men who justify their cruelty (often against female characters) with assured but inhumane rhetoric. Jack is evidently a bad guy: he tricks, tortures, and kills, mostly women, in often convoluted ways he calls his crimes “art,” enshrining them in photographs for the media. And because Lars isn’t just a provocateur, never one to shock his audience and distance himself from it with a sense of righteousness (hello, Michael Haneke), it is also his most bashful admission of guilt, fear, and regret as an artist-a major work reduced to a bothersome provocation by too many critics to count.Īnyone with even a minimal knowledge of von Trier’s cinema will make the connection between von Trier and Jack, the Ted Bundy–ish serial killer played by Matt Dillon, whose performance reveals an astonishing range and comic timing. The House That Jack Built is far from the first time that von Trier has sent his audience on a downward spiral into hell, but it is the film that best expresses his reasons for doing so. To his detractors, his fans, and all his spectators, von Trier says “close your eyes, relax, and let me take you to the scary places I know so well.” Yet the old man’s irritation also speaks for von Trier’s: the Danish director, now 62 years old, doesn’t guarantee answers and has seen things you people wouldn’t believe. The older man heard in The House That Jack Built soon warns his interlocutor Jack, who wishes to confess more about himself, “just don’t think you’re going to tell me anything I haven’t heard before.” There might be a hint of irony in the old man’s blasé attitude knowing the director’s confrontational and playful work, chances are that Jack’s tales and opinions at least will be fascinating, and probably outrageous. The effect in both of these sequences is unmistakably hypnotic. Slowly, von Trier draws in the viewer and makes him weary, calling back to the opening of his 1991 film Europa, in which Max von Sydow’s velvety tones take the viewer into a trance “still deeper into Europa,” while the repetitive rhythm of railroad tracks flashes on screen. Lars von Trier’s highly anticipated and already hotly debated new film, The House That Jack Built, begins with a black screen and a disembodied male voice saying, “Can I ask you something?” An older man, equally invisible, replies, “I can’t promise I’ll answer.” As we eavesdrop on this cryptic conversation, the darkness before our eyes seems to somehow grow deeper we have no choice but to focus solely on these unknown voices. ![]() 7/26/2023 0 Comments Forspoken genres![]() ![]() Then there is Cuff, Frey's magical talkative bracelet companion that gets stuck on her arm. What’s clear is that developers have yet to be able match the performance of current generation systems at launch. Nintendo doesn’t like talking about power in detail, but it looks like the system is just about as powerful as the 360. It depends on your expectations for the system. I can actually see myself going online to play this way with friends fairly regularly, despite the small amount of players online. The graphical trade-off is minimal, and it feels like you’re enjoying a micro-LAN party. I can invite a friend over to play, we both get to have our own screen that’s comfortable to use, and we can either play the competitive multiplayer or work together to take out some zombies. The multiplayer modes using both the TV and the GamePad are what make the Wii U special. These UI and performance hiccups could very well be fixed in future releases, but as a first pass this is very solid take on Black Ops 2. It’s confusing, and if there’s a solution that doesn’t involve rebooting the game and not hitting the “display” button on the controller, I’d love to hear it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to switch back once I had enable GamePad play. The GamePad can be made the game’s primary display when you first begin play, but the game won’t allow you to play with a friend using the TV with this option engaged. It’s an easy-going, very social way to play multiplayer games of Black Ops 2, and teaming up with a buddy in the same room allows you to mop up other players in multiplayer pretty efficiently. Once both players get their own screen the game becomes much more enjoyable, and since both of you don’t have to stare at the television you can stretch out and relax. This isn’t split-screen, it’s something much better. We can only hope co-op games played on the television and the GamePad increase in performance as developers learn how to optimize the Wii U, or even use the hardware as the target platform. Even this isn’t quite as impactful as it sounds as shadows ‘baked’ into the environments are still there.” Considering this is a first-generation game, and Black Ops 2 is the first game to offer this sort of multiplayer function on the Wii U, the game is very playable in this state. “Frame-rate definitely takes a hit (which varies according to the map and definitely muddies controller response), but resolution is maintained and the only noticeable visual downgrade comes from the removal of dynamic shadows. “This mode - indeed, split-screen in general - is not without its trades,” Eurogamer’s in-depth look at the game’s performance stated. It’s never a deal breaker, and the game is always playable, but the inconsistent performance is jarring after coming from the beauty of the PC version or the rock-solid frame rate of the 360 version. The frame rate takes a hit any time there are many things going on in one scene, and it’s something that’s actively distracting during play. So where do you feel the first-gen-ness of Black Ops 2? In the game’s frame rate. The question isn’t whether these problems exist, it’s whether they can be fixed in future games, after developers learn their way around the architecture. Long load times are common on new system launch titles, and they’re certainly on display on most launch Wii U games. Nintendo has been tight-lipped when it comes to explaining what’s actually inside the Wii U, and we have no way of knowing how much time developers had to work with the system before launch. ![]() It’s hard to make any judgments about the Wii U’s relative power, or lack of power, from launch games. There are also some downsides to playing the game on the Wii U. ![]() 7/26/2023 0 Comments Usps package tracking![]() ![]() They can put a yellow sticker on it and divert it to one of those 400 inspectors just like that. It’s still en route, as far as the customer is concerned. If the package is flagged, and then it is scanned at some waypoint, there is no reason that that scan necessarily has to show up on the tracking website. Not just customs, but sorting and processing at various intermediate cities, etc. There are more points than just origin and delivery, especially for packages that come overseas, and then have to cross the continental U.S. Given a tracking number that has raised suspicion, that package could be flagged for further attention anywhere it’s sorted, processed, or scanned. Notwithstanding the Constitution, I don’t think it takes a warrant for postal inspectors to open mail, and I know it doesn’t take probable cause. It shows guilty knowledge and lessens the credibility of “I don’t know a thing about that parcel you delivered, I’m just receiving it for a friend”. Getting an IP address is just icing on the cake. The parcels have to be identified on the originating end. How many drug parcels could maybe 400 Inspectors nationwide identify by having a computer spit out a parcel ID at one of 30,000 delivery units and they: respond to the delivery unit, locate the package, obtain a search warrant, open the parcel, put together a search warrant for the receiving address, assemble a team to serve the warrant, and execute the warrant in such a time that the addressee doesn’t suspect something is awry? None. There are only about 1,200 total Postal Inspectors, including management in the US and they cover external crimes, physical security of Post Offices, child exploitation, revenue fraud and mail fraud in addition to drugs in the mail. In transit the parcel loses its individuality in a container as large as a 53 foot trailer. Either the mailer or the reciepient will query for a given parcel.Īssociating a physical package with a tracking number can be done at two places – at the origin or the delivery point. In the end, they were right: the researchers showed that DarkBERT outperformed other large language models, which should allow security researchers and law enforcement to penetrate deeper into the recesses of the web. Saying that English is the business language of the Dark Web wouldn't be entirely correct, but it's a specific enough concotion that the researchers believe a specific LLM had to be trained on it. DarkBERT is the result of that database being used to feed the RoBERTa Large Language Model, a model that can analyze a new piece of Dark Web content - written in its own dialects and heavily-coded messages - and extract useful information from it. To train the model, the researchers crawled the Dark Web through the anonymyzing firewall of the Tor network, and then filtered the raw data (applying techniques such as deduplication, category balancing, and data pre-processing) to generate a Dark Web database. It seems the model was severely undertrained when released, far below its maximum efficiency. It has seen a renaissance of sorts, with researchers discovering it actually had more performance to give than could be extracted from it in 2019. DarkBERT, as its South Korean creators called it, has arrived - follow that link for the release paper, which gives an overall introduction to the dark web itself.ĭarkBERT is based on the RoBERTa architecture, an AI approach developed back in 2019.
